McSorley into Edgewood history

Cougars grappler reaches many milestones, including joining older brother as only wrestlers in school history to go to state three times.

FAIRFIELD - Edgewood High School junior wrestler Nick McSorley won more than just a Division I district championship Saturday night, Feb. 28, at the Fairfield Arena.

With a 5-4 victory against Moeller's Jake Corrill in the 119-pound title match, McSorley accomplished the following milestones:

• Won the school's first district championship since Kurt Stoffregen in 1999.
• Set the school record for single-season tournament championships with eight.
• Joined his older brother and assistant coach Mike McSorley as the only wrestlers in school history to qualify for the state tournament three times.

"I let him in my club," Mike said. "I actually teared up a little bit thinking about it, knowing that us two are the only ones to do that in Edgewood history."

Nick wasn't as emotional as Mike, but he was every bit as appreciative of the significance of the moment.

"I'm up there with the big names in Edgewood history now," Nick said. "Guys like Kurt Stoffregen and Gordy Gordon and Jim Williams."

"And Mike McSorley," Mike added with a laugh.

"And definitely Mike McSorley," Nick said. "It means a lot to me to know my name is up there with the greats."

McSorley took a 4-2 lead into the third period, but Corrill scored a reverse with 50 seconds left in the match to tie it at 4-4.

Corrill immediately cut McSorley loose for an escape that made it 5-4, and that's how things stayed as McSorley won his 31st consecutive match to improve to 34-1.
