August 20, 2008 By Daniel Otten of Celina High School Click to view the gallery The 2008 cross-country season got under way Tuesday as the Runnin' Dogs hosted the annual Mercer County Meet. All six Mercer County schools took to the Wright State Lake Campus 5000-meter course on a sunny, hot afternoon. The CHS Men's season got off to a great start as the Bulldogs defended their county championship. Five of the top 10 finishers wore the Celina green and white. Junior Andrew Goodwin won the individual title for the 2nd year in a row, crossing the line in 17:06. Senior Mitch Williams was right behind Andrew in the runner-up slot. Senior Peter Starnes took 5th of the 66 finishers, with junior Nate Gunter taking 9th and senior Luke Bonvillian getting 10th. The Dogs 6th and 7th harriers were Nick Siebert (12th, and Eric Ballinger 14th). The Ladies finished 4th in their portion of the meet. Coldwater defended their championship from 2007. Freshman Marissa Gibbons led the Dogs finishing 13th. Freshman Claire Schmitmeyer was next in 18th, followed by junior Larae Dorsten (24th), Micah Engle (30th), and Jamie Owens (48th) of the 63 competitors. Next up for the Dogs...the 27th annual Celina Rotary Invitational, on Saturday, August 23.
